Viking Dishwasher Not Draining in Andover: Work Back From the Sump
Standing water at the end of a cycle almost always means the drain path is obstructed rather than that the pump has died. Work backwards from the sump: the filter stack first, then the high loop, the air gap and the disposer knockout plug.
The programme light has gone out, the dishes are hot, and there is a pool of grey water lying across the floor of the tub. Nothing sounded wrong while it ran. The obvious reaction is to run it again, which is how a small blockage gets a second load of debris packed on top of it.
The useful way to attack this is backwards. Water leaves a Viking dishwasher along a fixed path, and if you start where it begins that journey and work outwards, the fault turns up in order rather than by guesswork. Almost none of the early steps need a tool.
How much water is supposed to be there
A quantity of water in the sump is designed behaviour — it stops the pump seal drying out between cycles — so a damp well in the middle of the tub floor is not a fault and never was. The line to watch is whether water is standing over the filter and out across the flat of the tub. That is drainage failing.
Before touching anything, write three things down. When it started. Whether it happens on every programme or only on one — a short cycle that leaves water while a long one does not is a different animal from a machine that never empties. And whether anybody has worked on the kitchen, the sink or the waste plumbing in the last month or two.
That last question earns its place in Andover. A great many of these calls arrive within weeks of somebody else’s job: a new disposer in a North Andover kitchen, a trap replaced under a Shawsheen Village sink where the original 1920s cabinet run leaves almost no room to work, a countertop swapped in Andover Center where the machine had to come out and go back in. The filter stack, which is where this usually ends
Most standing-water calls end at the filter, and it lifts out by hand. Expect a coarse cylinder that twists free of the sump mouth and a flat fine screen sitting underneath it. What has collected on those two parts is the first hard evidence you get, and it usually names the fault outright.
Read the debris rather than just rinsing it away. Seeds, bottle labels, eggshell and torn foil are a straightforward mechanical blockage with a straightforward fix. A tacky brown film across the mesh is fat that never got hot enough to leave the machine, and it will return unless the wash temperature or the cycle choice changes. A chalky white crust is mineral deposit, which is the slow version of this whole problem.
With the filter out, reach into the sump and feel around gently. Glass from a broken tumbler and small bone fragments are the usual passengers, and a shard resting against the impeller will produce a rattle on the drain step that people describe as the pump grinding.
Wash the parts under a hot tap with a soft brush. Nothing wire, nothing abrasive, and nothing chemical — drain cleaner is not appropriate in a dishwasher and will attack seals and the pump. The drain hose, the high loop and the air gap
The hose has to climb before it falls. If it runs flat or downhill from the machine to the waste, the tub and the drain effectively sit at the same level, and water finds its way back in as fast as the pump sends it out. That rise comes either from a high loop strapped up under the counter or from an air gap fitted through the sink deck.
Which of the two you have depends on what was required when the kitchen was signed off, and both are common. If there is a small chrome cylinder standing on the deck beside the tap, that is the air gap, and it can silt up. When it does, water spits out of it into the sink and everyone concludes the sink is blocked.
The single most predictable version of this fault follows a new waste disposer. A dishwasher plumbed into a disposer will not drain at all until the knockout plug inside the disposer’s inlet has been driven out, and it is easy to forget. The tell is the history: the machine has not drained since the day the disposer went in, rather than getting gradually worse.
Kinks are the other post-renovation classic. The machine comes out, the hose gets looped behind it, and pushing it back into the opening folds the loop against the wall. What to hand over to a technician
Stop where you find a burning smell, a breaker that has tripped, or water on the kitchen floor rather than inside the tub. Those three move the problem out of plumbing and into either electrics or damage that spreads while you carry on testing. Isolate the machine and leave it.
What a visit establishes is the part the tub floor cannot show you: whether the pump is actually being commanded, whether it is drawing current when it is, whether the impeller turns freely, and whether the drain path holds against pressure. A displayed fault code helps here but does not decide anything, because a code names the symptom the control observed and not the component that failed. Replacing whatever a code appears to point at is how people spend money twice.

Is a little water in the bottom normal?
Yes. The sump is meant to retain some water between cycles so the pump seal does not dry out, and a damp well is the machine behaving as designed. What is not designed is water lying above the filter and spreading over the flat of the tub. Damp well, fine. Standing pool, not fine.
Why did this start right after we fitted a new waste disposer?
Because a disposer arrives with a knockout plug sealing its dishwasher inlet, and that plug has to be driven out during installation. Left in place, the machine has nowhere to send its water and will not empty at all. It is a quick fix for whoever fitted the disposer, and the first thing to rule out.
Does pre-rinsing dishes prevent this?
Not really, and heavy rinsing can work against you, because these machines detect soil and adjust to it. What counts is getting solids off the plate before loading. Bones, fruit stones, seeds and bottle labels are what end up wedged against an impeller. Scrape thoroughly, rinse lightly, and clean the filter as often as your guide advises.
